Here is a jaw dropper that I thought was already photo-documented here on the forum but apparently not! I crossed a nice yellow clone of flava var. flava with a yellowish, less red clone of S. purpurea ssp. venosa and ended up with this! Similar crosses were made in the past but none of them produced anything like this!
Out of the entire seed batch of around 60 individuals, only 6 different seedlings (so far!) stood out from the rest as being super yellow, they were carefully tagged and this past winter, all 6 of them have been propagated so that this beautiful thing can enter circulation. Each division from each respective mother plant was propagated separately so if a single mother plant turns out to be "the one," the divisions won't all get mixed up. As a heads up, I wasn't able to get too many divisions out of all the plants, but the ones that were taken are super healthy, hoping to have these available around July 2024 at the earliest.
The most notable trait of this new standout cultivated variety is the upright hood, it's straight up SUPER YELLOW! These clones color up relatively easily, they need full sun and prefer to be undisturbed to reach their fullest color potential. With the right conditions, can the bodies be pure yellow? I don't know yet, the picture below suggest they're reddish yellow, but these seedlings haven't necessarily reached their fullest color potential just yet. Time will tell us more!
This highly sought after, new cross is full of absolute shorties! Best pitchers are produced in the spring/summer, it doesn't appear to have any late summer or early fall pitcher production but that will be determined as the years progress. They're still small seedlings as of now, so I don't know what they look like at maturity but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize these are for sure very special!
