Hi friends of nature,
first of all happy Easter!
Yesterday I was hunting in the Austrian forest.
It is a special forest known for its extra rare wildlife.
Hunting means with my camera (off course!)!
My intention was to find a special snake, namely Vipera ammodytes. It is one of the two poisonous snakes here in Austria. It can be found only in some special districts of Austria. Unfortunately I could not find some, it was may be too late in the morning. If the temperature gets too high, they are very quick and disappear before you can spot them.
Nevertheless I could find some nice animals. Let me I take this as an opportunity to introduce some Austrian wildlife to you.
First of all I found a small special lizard, called the “wall lizard” (free translated, I don’t think that there is a translation for this small animal). The scientific name is: Podarcis muralis
Do you find it?
Here some help:
… and here the portrait:
For your understanding: if I make photos in nature, I do not change anything. Animals and plants are photographed as I find them. It takes me sometimes minute after minute to wait for the correct conditions (light, position, …). It is my goal to show nature as it is. This is “part of the game”.
By doing so, you can discover way more compared to doing just snap shooting. You have to be patient, but this is also calming you down. This is what I really appreciate.
A second lizard I found (and this is also rare in Austria) is call “smaragd lizard” (Lacerta viridis). It is very beautiful and Austrians largest lizard.
There had been also a large amount of (unfortunately very fast!) butterflies. They had a size of around 2 cm:
If have no idea about its scientific name!
In Austria we find three different species of scorpions. One is Euscorpius gamma. All of our scorpions are not really poisonous. Their intensity is like a wasps bite.
Last but not least I found Pinguicula alpine in a very unusual site! It was a wet part of an unpaved road in a shadowed section of the forest, among the strong competition of pure grass. This is not the environment you will find this plant. In most situations it is found in blank rock gaps, where very small amount of substrate is used to grow. It can be pretty succulent there. In spring they get a plenty of water. They grow bloom and then they go back to dormancy again in begin / mid of summer.
Here the overview:
The closer look:
… and the detail:
Watch the beautiful flowers!
The plants seem not suffer in this very uncomfortable situation. One plant was situated directly in the track of the wheels. It seems to be in a good condition.
It was a really great day in the mountains. I wish I would have way more time to explore nature in this way.
If anyone of you became interested now to Austrians nature: you are welcome. If I can give you a tour, let me know, would be a pleasure to me.
BT.
