I wanted to post something interesting that I uncovered about a week ago as I was moving my seedlings into their permanent home. This seedling has always been a strong grower for me, so much so that I took periodic photos of it every once in a while. This batch of Carolina Atropurpurea seedlings (a Waccamaw selfing) has a number of standout growers, especially for a selfing, but this one definitely surprised me with a flower stalk at just about a week over 14 months since germination. For reference, these seedlings were under a fixed 12 hour photo period under sodium lighting (though 6 feet under the lights) in the greenhouse space I used to rent since germination. All seedlings received a 300ppm juice boost of Max Sea from an early age, with a little shot of liquid humic acids for a grand total of around 400ppm shoved down their gullets. I generally filled up tubes once a week, but probably filled the biggest plants twice a week as I came by to water and kept them pretty much always filled. In early november, the seedlings were moved out of the rental greenhouse space and into a new space under a mixed spectrum bank of 12 HO T5 lights on an 11 hour photo period. 2 weeks ago, they were moved for the last time under a bank of 16 HO T5's with a 24 hour photo period. All the plants did freak out after that november move, and stalled their new pitcher production for about a month.
The seedling in question was taken out of strat Nov 22nd, 2014. I don't have an exact germination date, but I believe it should have sprouted by the first week of december.
Here's the first photo I took - March 29th 2015:
By June 14th, the juice boost really kicked in and it was looking like:
On September 20th, full on roid rage:
October 18th:
October 31st, the big move:
After the move, the next flush of pitcher growth was smaller. You can see how much of a junkie it was by the left over inner-tube staining from the humic acids. December 11th:
And finally, here's Feb 12th. Crazy what a few weeks at 24 hour lighting does...
Flower stalk right before I trimmed it. This plant wasn't pushing hard on new growths until recently, but is now pushing up 3 new growths. Here's the flower bud right before I snipped it off:
