We were lost, but we had our hopes up that we'd find the place in the remote forest of Northwestern Florida. There weren't any street names, and some of the roads we took didn't seem to be traveled on recently. We thought we took the right turn, and then headed out deep into the forest. After about an hour of hiking, we ran into another dirt road, indicating this isn't the spot...the plants should be here!
With our luck shot but our hopes high, we decided to head back, but on the way back, we decided to take a "sketchy" looking dirt road...maybe they're here? Going down the road, the forest opened up into a huge savanna, probably a few square miles in size! It didn't take long to realize we found the next site-YESSSSSSSSS!!! IT was surprising because the road we had to take wasn't really a road anymore...or at least, it has been so overgrown, you couldn't tell it was there anymore. Damon didn't want us to get stuck in the mud, so he insisted we stop and walk, which was a good idea because the bog was very close by.
This is the road we took-can you see it?
This savanna is unreal in size...you could walk for hours and still be in the field:
The field went as far as the eye could see. There was probably more to it than what we saw:
Just like the other hilly habitats, most of the field wasn't colonized by sarracenias: you'd mainly find CP's growing in seeps and boggy creek beds:
IT's very easy to get disoriented in these sites. Everywhere looks the same:
A typical seep on a gentle slope. Water was flowing, but very slowly:
These muddy seeps are very deep. After taking this photo, my foot was stuck, and I almost couldn't get out!
Beautiful patch:
Leucos growing on a slope:
Closer pic: some of these were pretty white:
Plants at this site were feasting heavily on love bugs-this one is filled to the top!
In fact, most traps we saw were filled with love bugs:
more photos to come!
