Unfortunately, alucard is a grex cultivar, meaning any seedling resulting from crossing a red rubricorpora with royal ruby can technically slide as being Alucard, so long as it fits the general cultivar description. You won't be able to say they're imposters either because the cultivar description allows this. Let's just say rubricorporas are very diverse: the Bay Co, FL plants are much different than the liberty Co, FL plants, and even amongst the two populations, there's incredible diversity within each population. As an example, If you look through this forum (in the flava section), you can see many different variations of rubricorpora from Liberty Co, FL, and from experience, the clone of rubricorpora you use has a big impact on the looks of the offspring. Nevertheless, the other side of the coin of a Grex cross is that nobody else can make the cross and call it a different cultivar! I think the breeder noticed some level of uniformity in the original cross, and assuming you have those exact parents and create more plants, perhaps that was the spirit of the cultivar description. On the other hand, we know there is a propensity to manipulate loopholes in the cultivar description, so that's why it's important to be very detail oriented when naming these plants.
With all that aside, there are two really nice individuals that stood out from the crowd in the original alucard cross:
alucard 'Prince of Darkness' and alucard 'select.' I completely could see why prince of darkness is a highly desirable clone with those gigantic traps and dark color, but quite frankly, I didn't know why there was so much demand for Alucard select. Maybe I was missing something?
This year completely changed that misperception of the select clone just being a hyped out plant that doesn't really live up to the name! I just got a trap on my plant that is nearly 3' tall and it's in a 6" pot! first thing I thought was where did that come from?! I've seen the traps color up in the past, so I know they can also get dark, but they need to age and have the right environment to color up right. I'm now officially pretty impressed with Alucard 'Select', photos taken 5/30/19: Pardon the mess:
Trap is literally just opening, so it hasn't fully colored up:
Beautiful red traps:
