What do you get when you cross the most sought after red leucophylla clone on the planet with the darkest Red leucophylla on the planet? Well, to be honest, the results weren't all that rosey at first, and it took an incredible amount of labor (long nights after work) and resources (lots of space under grow lights) to narrow the batch down to the best of the best. The resulting seedlings were all over the place, and there were lots and lots and lots of runts, surprisingly! You also get a ton of golden red leucophyllas. many of which were also dark, bu they looked quite "hybridy." The dark red dark red leucophylla clone from Covington Co, AL is a wild card of genetics and is now confirmed of somewhat recent hybrid origin, so it still has genetics that causes the seedlings to segregate. This can be construed as fun or a PITA, depending on who's point of view you're looking at.
To recap. what has already been outlined about this cross in another thread, I grew out several hundred seedlings from this cross, culled every single last one of the runts, discarded the obvious bad looking ones, and now I'm left with a mixture of decent looking plants and a few jaw droppers. Many "inferior" plants are still in the batch, but inferior is relative: compared to other red leucophyllas, most of these individuals are impressive!
With this cross, I was after a vigorous individual that produces more red on it than any other leucophylla in cultivation, and that red has to be DARK! Yes, a few met the criteria, but surprisingly, it wasn't many. Those are the only plants from this batch that will be distributed in the end. The goal was to come up with a plants that beat the existing red leucophyllas in cultivation, and so far, it looks like these will!
Probably one of the most exciting finds in this batch so far was this white lipped seedling below! Just so you know, there's only one other white lipped leucophylla clone out there that I know of, more about that plant here: sarracenia.proboards.com/thread/3753/leucophylla-red-white-lips-franklin This new seedling not only has white lips, but also has a red body where the red stretches far down the pitcher, so it's a double whammy! Of course, it's too early to tell if this will be a winner, but from a lot of experience, it's very likely to be!
This is exactly what I was aiming for: this seedling is twice the size of all the rest: it has vigor, dark red color, decent shape, and that red stretches really far down the trap, even on spring pitchers! The main unknown about this individual is whether this clone will produce nice fall pitchers, I'll know in a couple of months:
You don't need to be a professional breeder to tell that these darker indivdiuals stick out of the crowd:
This is just the beginning of the story, to be continued as the plants mature.....
