Many of you are probably scratching your heads (metaphorically that is), wondering what in the heck THC has to do with rubra gulfensis. Is it because it's so vibrant green? Or wait, wait.....maybe it's this: the plants are really that bomb, like you were burning Napalm, right? Thing is, I don't remember S. rubra ssp. gulfensis being all that icky, icky, sticky....flava seems to produce the most nectar of all the species! But let me be the first to be a decent role model and recommend you say no to drugs.....unless you're in a legal state, over the age of 21, or have a legitimate medical need.
Spoiler alert! THC stands for Turkey Hen Creek! Sorry, NERDY® is the new cool, especially around here. It's just a coincidence that the location of this population has an surprising acronymn, but the plants themselves couldn't be more intriguing from a geek perspective! There's red-ish clones, many different shapes, and weird long lidded individuals in this popuation!
Gulfensis has long been reported by breeders (amongst themselves, it's not very common knowledge) as being an under-utlized pathway to breed long lasting traps. So why aren't people doing much breeding with them? You tell me, I just convinced myself to work with this species! LOL
Truth be told, they're much like S. alatas: a few years ago, nobody gave a rats aaaa...abdomen about the species, but now everyone and their mama wants a piece of alata! From my perspective, it's hard to photograph and I ain't no professional picture taker, but I did finally snap some decent shots of them.
these pics were taken 2/10/19:
Interesting red form:
With some green right just below the mouth. This reminds me of minor okee giant, and this interesting color trait does carry on with certain hybrids. Maybe someone will focus on it and make some extreme contrasting colors:
S. rubra ssp. gulfensis, a copper topped plant! Don't you dare call it cuprea! LOL
Different perspective:
And here's the long lidded individual:
Every last one of these has worthy characteristics for breeding:
If you have gulfensis from this population, feel free to post pics!
