Hi all! Thought I'd give this clone its own thread since I'm still hanging onto quite a few of its siblings and the other thread is bound to get a little cluttered this year. For those who haven't seen it yet, this is by far the best of the batch from my 2019 cross of Waccamaw x Adrian Slack. It's still not at full size and has yet to flower, but last season it already demonstrated lots of desirable traits, the most obvious being its stunning coloration. It's shaped exactly like a pure flava but has an incredibly vibrant red upper pitcher laced with deep blackish veins. It's the only sibling in the batch with this super bright, long lasting red color. There are lots of vibrant raspberry red plants out there, sure, but to have those colors superimposed on a flava form is pretty nifty I think. On top of that, it produced pitchers fairly steadily throughout the entire growing season (at least 7 pitchers on one growth point as of August 2022, with no phyllodia) and still looked great this January, outlasting nearly all of its siblings. It's off to a bit of a slower start than the rest of the batch this year, but the rhizome still looks super healthy, so fingers crossed for a great show soon!
By the way, I'm calling it "Kidney Donor" because a) its deep red color and network of dark veins make it look a lot like bloody flesh, and b) at the time I made the cross, Waccamaw and Adrian Slack were the two priciest plants in my collection, and people are always joking about giving up a kidney to get a valuable plant, so the name sort of stuck.
Anyway, on with the photos! Grab your beverage of choice and enjoy this 2022 throwback
First, a few iPhone snaps from May 17, 2022, right after I got home from college (what a nice surprise, eh?). Kind of terrible lighting in the first one, but you can get a sense of the stately form of the plant:
Two other shots to better showcase the color and venation:
Now for some nicer shots with the Canon. These are completely unedited by the way.
June 22, among siblings. The color is definitely unique to this clone!
July 22, quick cell phone shot. Senescing spring pitchers are replaced by nearly identical summer traps!
July 31/Aug 1, back to the Canon. This thing catches the sun in a magnificent way--always a delight in the morning!
Check out that lid:
Even the freshly popped pitchers had some pretty sweet color at that time of year:
And now a truly terrible quality screenshot from a video I took on August 10. At least you can get a sense of the prolific and consistent growth habit--that's all from a single growth point! Some pitchers did unfortunately get slightly deformed by aphids and the like, but no phyllodia! Just imagine a dense clump of this thing...
Colors still strong on August 6 and 17, respectively. These are cell phone shots:
When I came home from fall semester, Kidney Donor was still looking good! Here it is on December 30, still super bright red.
And that's about it for this past season! I hope you've enjoyed these shots as much as I've enjoyed compiling them. Looking forward to watching this clone in 2023!
