Not from my experience. They do decline in time, so I bought seeds that were from the previous year and the germination rate was not that great. Fresh seeds have the best germination rate for sure. Also I leave my seeds at least 6 weeks in the fridge, often more like 8 weeks and I have a very good germination rate.

Thanks Daniella and Alexis. This is my first time growing more complex hybrids (at least 3 different species on each side) from seed and I was a little surprised when germination was under 40% (previously I've gotten 90-100% under my conditions). I'm going to assume they just needed a longer stratification and have picked out the non-germinating seeds and put them back in the refrigerator. If I'm lucky I'll wind up with a few more plants; if not, it's only a small effort.
Quite often non-germinated seeds will sprout the year after, after a second winter. if you leave them alone.
I just wanted to thank alexis for the good advice. I picked out the seeds that didn't germinate (about 15 of them) and put them back into stratification for 6 weeks. They came out on July 4 and so far it looks like just over half of them have sprouted.

stu: Hi Mike: I’m pleased to report that the S. rubra wherryi Chatom Giant you sent has arrived in great shape as did the bonus plant from NC. Both are now back under southern skies and are feeling warm, humid, and at home again. Thanks!

adaetz100: Sarracenia purpurea tends to add a lot of red/purple to its offspring, but there are some lovely dark red flava x leucophylla crosses too. Look up 'Royal Ruby' if you're not familiar with it already--it's a natural flava x leuco hybrid
