Very early fall: young freshly hatched crab spider feeding on nectar. Spiders are carnivorous, but when the opportunity arises and the need arises, a sweet energy alternative is welcome, for young people as for adults.
It is on the SHY-013 by JPR. It is a 4-way hybrid (S X [(alata X flava) X Mitchelliana]) which is colored in dark purple.
Pitchers are green at openning. In full sunny light, they are colored in summer & autumn (here it is the pitchers of late spring which are purple). The 2nd run of pitchers takes place at the end of summer and in the open air, the pitchers do not have time to take the ideal full dark coloring. Under shelter, the pitchers are struggling to blush. In addition, the base of the urns, spring, summer & autumn are always green, at least at the base of the urn about 10 cm. A very Purple & intense Sarracenia.
Summer day without sun. This male hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus ?) is on the lid of this dark S. flava atropurpurea => Golden body but reflections in a dark eye ... It is on the F7 JYD, a still young challenger, who may be able to compete in the "Who is the darkest" category when it takes on its adult colors…. postimg.cc/06CtV7sv
Come on, a little summer memory while waiting for the sun that is waiting in the west part of France.
This is the F47 MK flava "Very heavily veined form turning to an all red plant, very heavily veined inner pitcher hood". Many red veins and, from the beginning of summer, in a sunny situation, the plant quickly turns red.
Active hunting for this little saltic spider: on the lookout, it watches for its prey, which we can hardly guess at the top of its legs, hidden away behind the corner of the lips of this S. oreophila var.ornata just opened. His goal ? This very young spider, passive hunter, who has woven its web and waits for small flying insects to catch it. The saltique will not lose sight of the juvenile arachnid which is protected by its saving sheath of woven silk. Not having too many of the 2 predators to eliminate the aphids very present at the moment, I will remove it to carry it further on to other pitchers. During the same day, I will have to do it twice because… running in his steps forever the same target… Then another ride on the flava 'Claret' SFA-014 F from JPR during the opening. I may know this CV, it is always a pleasure to review these contrasting colors, which remain very present during the season. The yellow pedipalps (part of the mouthparts) of this saltique echo inside the pitcher. postimg.cc/p92dRytN postimg.cc/K4gmXtgk postimg.cc/ppbRPyD0 postimg.cc/v4Gy6j2f postimg.cc/NKbc84ZV postimg.cc/YhkZXFNw
Some S. var.atropurpurea, shortly after opening, outdoors & due south, photo at 1 p.m., without any image correction. The intensity of purple / red will increase over time ; some pitchers deformed by hail.

Hoverfly at meal ; black-greenish spider ambushed on its web between 2 pitchers. Everyone is on the S. flava var.ornata F156MK "Prince George Co. VA. Very attractive red vertical veining" which is fine, elegant & slender.
Young flava 'Goldie' at the opening In full sun and in the evening light which heats up even if necessary (especially against the light) the golden yellow side. The proximity to a dark var.atropurpurea flava accentuates the contrast.
summit: @dirtydivisions Thanks for that! I'm sitting around 87-88F with the dome fully sealed but I wasn't doing that and sacrificing humidity to keep it cooler but I'll go ahead and close it down now!

mikee: Thanks you chofah, there is a great video from The Pitcher Project with Phil Faulisi this was what I was looking for. However it still appears to be wait and see what results come from the cross. Many thanks
Apr 21, 2020 3:41:45 GMT -5
Willy: It would be rather silly to expect totally predictable results from a cross. The individual plants grown from the seeds will vary, sometimes quite a bit, even with carefully protected hand pollination. If you open polinate, the variety may be even greater.
