To address bogman's comment about questioning a cultivar, I think that's a completely valid point, but it's more of a case by case situation. for example, S. Ellie Wang is unquestionable, nothing out there like it, and the colors are ridiculous, it's easy to grow, easy to color up, pretty much bling-bling by all means. But I've bred plants in the past that I didn't personally deem worthy and they were almost trashed, yet it turns out growers find it very popular! Case and point, S. Leuco burgundy x minor giant 'pink clone' is : sarracenia.proboards.com/thread/438/leuco-burgundy-minor-giant-clone
Bogman: do you think that black Sarracenia I bred (the one that colors up relatively easily) has crappy shape? I heard such feedback and come to think of it, I agree, seems like the shape can be improved. What do you think? If another black plant with better shape is bred, maybe that black one isn't all that and won't stand the test of time.
"The best" is, at most, a temporary opinion. The registration process really is more important as a way to standardize a name for a cultivar which is apt to be, or has been, distributed. For example, if meizzwang sends me one a those black things, it could be a code letter/number or cultivar name, like "Bogman's Torment", LOL!
Crappy shape? Has this dark baby reached mature size? I have no problem with the shape, but it's really hard to tell from pictures. You know, it's easier to tell in real life. And... it might grow to a different shape in Virginia. heh heh. It looks like a landmark in color breeding and potentially a major stud/breeder plant. Take those "crappy shape-feedback" naysayers off the recipient list!
