Does this look like Leah Wilkerson?

I know there were a few angry people in this thread who thought they got cheated by receiving the “wrong” “Leah Wilkerson”. Here’s how I see it: When you purchase a LW while knowing the plant in the pic isn’t LW, and hope that you get the plant in the picture instead of a LW then you are willingly taking the chance that you may get the real LW instead of the one in the pic. Also, after talking with Josh I can say that the problem of the 2 different LW clones he was selling wasn’t his fault nor was it him trying to mislead or cheat anyone. He received 2 divisions of “LW” from two different growers who both said they got their divisions from Brooks Garcia. I for one would then believe that they were both the real LW since they came from the man himself, BG. The LW that I got from Brooks never looked even remotely like LW, but since I got it from Brooks I assumed that it had to be LW and maybe it was sickly for some reason. I believed this until I actually grew a piece of LW that I got directly from the mother clone on LW’s property. Growing these 2 separate plants close by each other showed me that the one I bought from Brooks was definitely NOT the real LW. I just figured a tag or two got mixed up ( which can happen) and Brooks unknowingly sent me the wrong plant....hopefully.

Through some further research and inquiry with different people I found out that around 2005 Brooks ran out of the LW clone that he had originally collected and had tried tissue culture and it didn't work out. So to get more plants Brooks decided to self LW. Recently this thread was shown to Brooks and he said that the brighter white Sarr that Josh had gotten as LW was most likely an F2 from that cross that he had made. This makes me think that my My “LW” imposter is most likely an F2 as well from Brooks’ ‘LW’ selfing.

Josh sent me both the whiter clone and the more typical looking LW clone late last year free of charge so I could grow them side by side with my LW which was collected from LW’s property. Here is what the two clones he sent to me looked like side by side.  The right one looks like the real LW to me:


Now these two plants are putting out new pitchers in my care and comparing just newly emerging pitchers I can see a color difference:


The real LW pitchers when emerging are much redder than the emerging pitchers of the suspected F2 Leah.

I am going to continue to update this thread with the two clone’s in question to show how different or similar they are. I am confident they will totally be different to my eye, but I guess we will see. Stay tuned!

I would love to see the real clone and the other clone crossed. I think it's offspring will be beautiful.

Looks like someone has some 'splainin to do'. I bought two LW from him after 2005. Are my plants fakes also. (Pretty sure they are ligit.) An F2 isn't the real deal ... we all know that. Sooner or later the word gets out. There are others with the same ethics on here as well. As it says in the Sales Section. Buyer Beware. Now there are three I will never buy from again.

The infamous imposter clone. Given all the drama, I wanted to grow this one first hand to learn more about it. It is suspected to be a leah wilkerson F-2, but nobody knows with certainty. The throat is very well defined, even on relatively small traps! pics taken 8/14/18:

Brooks himself said it may be from his LWx self cross to get more “LW”s when his attempt to get LW into tissue culture in 2005 failed. I think he did this before he understood Sarracenia genetics. To be honest, I don’t even know if he even grows Sarrs anymore. All I ever see him post are pics of his house that he’s constantly building on.

So sad that this clone is so dang notorious and has caused many people lots of grief! I guess "objects of desire" are naturally that way in some cases, but if you handle the situation right, everyone should be enjoying these plants.

A few observations of about this Leah Wilkerson Imposter in the short amount of time that I've grown it:
1) spring traps are impressive in color. Maybe it's beginner's luck (ie. I just began growing the plant), but from the pics I see online about this clone, it colors up well for many others.
2) red throat develops with ease, not something you need to grow for Jesus to get that color to show up. There are very few clones out there that have such characteristics.
3) Fall traps on this imposter clone look just like the spring/summer traps, but maybe a bit more colorful? the real deal Leah Wilkerson, on the other hand, tends to produce giant spring pitchers and smaller, different looking fall pitchers. This growth habit seems consistent in various different collections.
4) Vigor is medium I'd say: not fast growing, but not a snail's pace neither.

I think once we breed with this plant, we'll have more information that can help support or deny the Leah Wilkerson F2 hypothesis. LW has been bred with till kingdom come, so I'd expect a selfed LW to show some tell tale patterns that can help give us a hint as to what's going on. I've seen a lot of LW F-2's, and they're mostly crap, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is just an outstanding individual. For sure, it has very different growth habits compared to the real deal LW, but given the complex hybrid nature of LW, you can expect the offspring to do different things.

Personally, I think LW is over rated, and if I got this plant instead of LW, I'd be pissed at first...until I realized I got this instead! Now if it was the other way around: I wanted this plant below and got LW instead, Yeah, I'd be pissed for sure! that's just my own opinion though, everyone has their point of view that we all need to respect.

Josh is now calling the LW imposter “Lunchbox”. It’s a stupid name but I love the plant. I guess I could call it something else since it’s not his plant originally and it hasn’t been officially registered. Anyone have a name suggestion?

Personally I like LW’s spring traps better and LW imposter’s fall traps better. LW is a fantastic breeder plant and hopefully the imposter will be as well.

Was just going to ask if this was the "Lunchbox" he's been selling on ebay recently. I really like the clear windows on the imposter and its striking contrast. After looking at again, it reminds me of my Leah Wilkerson x Snowflake that I originally didn't like but now more and more impressed with. It doesn't have the same rich purple/pink to white contrast but has great windows, especially on its fall traps, which are more numerous but significantly smaller than the large spring traps.
Name recommendation? How about "Contraversy" or "Notorious L.W."?

Sidorian: yeah, I think Lunchbox is the tentative name, but not sure if it's official yet.

For sure dirtydivz, LW spring traps are the most impressive feature of that cultivar! They can get crazy gigantic and colorful. It's really interesting how some moorei clones perform better in the spring than fall, must be the flava influence? Another good example is S. leucophylla 'DARK RED' Covington Co, AL-no matter how well you take care of that plant, the spring traps are almost always to die for, while the fall traps are tiny and unimpressive. The plant goes into hardcore phyllodia mode during the summer and does absolutely nothing, so you'd think a big fall set of traps would emerge. But year after year, Jacklyn Shizzi aka Nathan aka NADA interesting emerges in the fall.

Even though I got my LW from Brooks, I think mine is the real deal.
It looks NOTHING like 'Lunchbox'.

LW imposter aka Lunchbox, not as impressive as last season, but I guess it's not fair to compare fall pitchers with spring trapz. Some people might want to know what's for breakfast, but others would rather know what's in your Lunchbox?


Leuco colors with a flava shape is definitely one of the key features of LW and its imposter:

PLEASE don't say this! I see people say stuff like this all the time, and it creates a false mythology, suggesting there are variations of the clone out there, when in fact there is only ONE correctly ID'd clone (a clone refers to ONE genetically distinct individual). Anything that is similar to (and this includes any individual from an F2 population) 'Leah Wilkerson' but clearly distinct from it, is NOT 'Leah Wilkerson'! To state that there are multiple clones of a distinct cultivar is very misleading, and is in fact misinformation.
