Hi everyone!
I found this forum on facebook today and it's great timing. I have been wanting to learn more about north american CP's lately. I have been interested in CP's for a while now. I Think that my favorite CP ever is Nepenthes, but i love learning about new plants all the time. I really enjoy growing plants in general, and CP are just the next step in a lifelong love of all things green. I am even going to college right now to become a horticulturist and botanist.
I love meeting new people and talking about plants. One of my favorite topics in CP's is how you got started and what your first plant was. Mine was typical, a VFT. I was in maybe third or fourth grade. I won it at the carnival and i was so excited. My poor little death dome never stood a chance. I was told to keep it in there and feed it meat. So that's what i did, watered the crap out of it and stuffed ALL of the traps with some nice tasty raw hamburger. Then we left on vacation, and much to my dismay upon returning it was dead and moldy. I remember being so mad that i couldn't keep the stupid thing alive. LOL. I've learned a lot since then, including that there are other carnivorous plants out there and even in our own backyard!
I currently grow some sarracenia (i think i have ten little guys), a couple VFT, a few outdoor sundews that i hope come back this spring, and one cobra lilly. I also have one butterwort, and several nepenthes. I just got my first cutting to take root, out of around twelve cuttings, it's the only on so far, and i have two others left. I'm pretty excited that they are doing ok. I was planning on building a mini greenhouse this fall, but winter got here too soon, so it will be in the spring.
I have one nepenthes hybrid setting seed right now, a maxima cross, and im hopeful that it will be a nice plant. I really like learning new ways to grow and cultivate and i am excited to have all of your knowledge at my fingertips. Thank you all for sharing and posting and i hope to become a contributing member soon.
