If you are like me, you don't really get to talk to many people in the "real" world about Sarracenia, so I was thinking it might be fun to do a weekly (or maybe some other length of time) thread where we talk about the names of certain plants. Each week we could tackle a few plants, including species, hybrids, and cultivars.
Here are a few things I was thinking we could discuss in the thread:
1. Pronunciation
It's likely we'll never all be on the same page, but it would be interesting to me to see how everyone else says their plants' names. For example, S. leucophylla. How do you say it? Loo-coh-FILL-uh? Loo-coh-FYE-luh? Loo-COH-fill-uh? We could even have a poll maybe, where we see the preferred pronunciations.
2. Where names came from
All of the greges, for example. Did you know S. x moorei comes from David Moore, the director of the botanic garden where Sarracenia were first artificially hybridized? And cultivars. Who is Judith Hindle?
People could share anecdotes they might have about certain names. For example, there's my Tarnok thread, which is still a work in progress. Or maybe people have some neat stories about plants in the Okefenokee Swamp.
3. Latin translations
We could talk about the meanings of the Latin names we use and what they apply to. Sarracenia flava, for example. Flava means yellow, but the plants aren't really yellow. Does yellow refer to the flower? We could discuss that. Or S. alata var. atrorubra and S. flava var. atropurpurea. What exactly does atro mean? and why aren't they both atrorubra or both atropurpurea?
4. Common names
Common names can be pretty neat. We could talk about the common names used for Sarracenia in general and see if there are any common names that are species or variety specific. Coleman Tarnok, for example, used to call S. flava var rugelii "Mississippi Rednecks."
5. Pictures
We could share any pictures or link to threads about the plants we're talking about each week.
6. Anything else?
What do you guys think? Would anyone be interested in participating if we were to do this? I'd be up for creating the thread each week, unless Jonathan Mejia or anyone else has a better idea of how to do this. We could take user input to see which plants we would talk about each week.
