With Covid rampant right now, as well as food prices going up significantly this year (at least in Northern California) lots of us have resorted to supplementing our own food supply via growing our own. Less time in public=safest option. It's nice to not have to go to the grocery store as often for fresh produce, and it's hard to beat the flavor of organically grown crops that aren't sprayed with crazy chemicals that shrink your you know what! Your brain of course! Sheesh.
Growing your own food on a significant scale, especially around here, comes with challenges: squirrels, gophers, voles, moles, raccoons, rabbits, deer, rats, mice, and in my case pill bugs! Yes, who would have thought pill bugs would DEVASTATE all of my root crops which are directly sown in the ground?! In order to succeed, we have to grow starts and transplant in pots before planting them in the ground. Anything that goes directly in the ground gets eaten before it has a chance to grow! For this reason, we can't grow root crops here until an organic solution to the pill bug situation is figured out. Maybe we'll solarize the soil in the summer (cover with black plastic and cook everything that way)
Enough talk, let's peep out the photos!
Asian Greens that have names I can't pronounce:
OMG, if you're making soup, this stuff is amazing! Drop the leaves in there for 30 seconds or so, just enough to wilt and BAM! Amazing texture and flavor. This is like a smaller version of Napa Cabbage, but with way more succulent, crunchier leaves. It's for sure a unique selection (package said it's a Taiwanese cultivar and a bunch of stuff in chinese that I can't read). Organically grown, this stuff actually has some depth of flavor:
No clue what this is, never seen it at asian markets. It's some sort of mustard green:
This is commonly known as chinese broccoli aka Chinese Kale aka Kai-lan(spelling?) I always hear my wife call it "Guy-LAAAAN," she speaks Cantonese, so for those of you who speak chinglish, you'll know what a homie is talking about:
And here's Celery! Have you ever tried starting it from seeds? They grow just slightly faster than Sarracenia, LOL These are 2 months old.....2 MONTHS!!!! They'll probably start growing much faster once they reach a certain size. This is my prized crop, have you ever tasted home grown celery? You'll become a food a-hole once you see how delicious it is home-grown:
Let's see what kind of veggies you have going in your garden? feel free to post pics and stories here!
