After getting another pop up while browsing here, this one saying that I’d read over 830 threads and suggesting that I register, I thought ‘yeah it’s about time’. So, I’m from Nebraska (5a-4b) and I first started growing sarracenia in the fall of 2018. I got really attached to the little things I’d picked up from a local garden center -knowing nothing about them at the time- and was driven to learn everything I could about them so they wouldn’t croak on me. The growing conditions I have are kind of difficult so it’s a job! But I’ve been pulled into the world of these plants to the point where I already want to grow them from seed and have fun making my own hybrids that can tolerate Nebraska weather.
Everyone loves tall sarras but thanks to the ever-present wind, my growing niche is probably going to have to be pitchers no taller than ten inches. At least purps, psitts, and maybe some short rubras and minors give me plenty cool stuff to work with! I have three No-ID plants that are probably a ‘Scarlet Belle’, ‘Carolina Yellow Jacket’, and some kind of purpurea/rosea as well as a “Sylwia” and a really adorable courtii. It’s so difficult to hold back from jumping the gun and grabbing up all kinds of things before I even know if I can pull off refrigerator dormancy in the long run. Speaking of the refrigerator, my sarras are in there sitting through their second year of dormancy, taking up both crisper drawers this time. I suspect I’ll be in trouble next year…
This forum seems like such a nice community and so knowledgeable, I’m really grateful for all the tips and directions everyone here has shared- it’s been by far the best resource I’ve found anywhere. Maybe in a few years I’ll have learned something that I can bring to the table and share in return.
