So, I’m growing a variety of peppers this year, mostly hot ones. I got started pretty late: my first sowings were mid/late May and I showed some just a few days ago. But, I’ve had good harvests from plants sown as late as mid August, so I’m not worried.
My Big Jim Legacy have stunned me with their vigor and size. These were direct sown into this large container in mid/late May, and are already close to 2’ tall and pushing flowers! They’re all the same height but done appear to be because a storm last night blew two of them kind of sideways, and they bent their tops. Apologies for the fertilizer splotches on the leaves
I’m planning on working on breeding a frost-tolerant pepper using the little wild ones around here. They taste great and are very hardy (the Bush pictured below is 3 and has taken 17° without dying to the ground!), but the flesh is very thin. I’m hoping a cross with Big Jim Legacy will fix that part but keep the frost tolerance.
Some other peppers I’ve got (a bit wonky from the wind last night, but otherwise fine).
Unknwon — either wild or Tabasco, sprouted last year and overwintered outside:
Guajillo from store bought pepper sown 6/14::
The first direct sown ones to come up (less than a week post sowing) were jalapeños:
The direct sown serranos have started too, but I’m still waiting on padrón, cubanelle, cayenne, pasilla, and fresno peppers (the last of which were sown yesterday).
I’ve grown peppers on and off for years because I love the flavor of them. They’re super easy here: I can start them most of the year and they produce well outside of the summer. They're also easy to sprout.
Who else grows peppers? What do you like to grow? Do you have any good cultivation tips?
