After stalking the forums for the past several months I finally made a profile.
Quickly about me I reside and grow in Honea Path SC just outside of Greenville Co. I have a relatively small collection consisting of Dionaea, Sarracenia, Drosera, and a couple Nepenthes.
My interest with CPs started in elementary school when my mom brought home a Venus Flytrap from the local grocery store. Myself along with my sisters managed to kill it in less than two weeks. The repeated poking with pencils, putting raw hamburger into the traps, and our dimly lit kitchen table made for a hostile environment.
I tried again in middle school when I found a “death cube” at Home Depot. I managed to keep this one alive for the entire summer(barely). I didn’t have any idea how to treat it at the time. I had read somewhere that they grew naturally in moss so I planted in dry Spanish moss. When the plant died back in winter (no clue at the time it went dormant) I threw it away.
Fast forward to 2011 my daughter was born. I wanted to have a hobby I could pass on to her(most of my hobbies include weightlifting and martial arts, wrestling and violent video games). So I ordered a five pack of seed grown VFT(I now have 20+ pots and a kiddy pool full from those five) from the Flytrapstore, The Savage Garden, and Grow Carnivorous Plants Vol. 1. Just after this I found pitcher plants in “death cubes” again at Home Depot. After reading/watching my new materials I started to have some success. My Sarracenia turned out to be a very sweet Purpera and Rubra, both of which I still have.
Over the next couple years my collection grew very slowly for awhile. Due to finances and lack of space. I added different species and easy to find cultivars(mainly VFTs, my first and true love) two or three per season for the first couple years.
The last year or so I’ve found online groups(mainly the ICPS Facebook forum) that have introduced me to Sarracenia cultivars and my newly found love for location specific specimens. I found this forum when someone pointed me to Mike Wang’s sale list. Since then I have been collecting plants at a much faster rate (much to my wife’s dismay) and plan to continue to do so. I have obsessively read thread after thread here learning a huge amount in a short time.
I sincerely appreciate the work many of you have put in both in cultivation and passing on information. Maybe one day I will have some small tie bit to add to the conversation. For now I’ll continue to eagerly read and purchase your fantastic offerings.
Happy Growing,
Will
