S. x areolata, the hybrid between S. leucophylla and S. alata, probably has the SECOND most potential of any primary hybrid (moorei being #1) but very little has been done with it. I think it's because most areolatas in cultivation are either wild-collected hybrids or man-made from casual crossings. Either way, the parent material may not have been superb and a lot of the plants you see are kinda skinny and not that impressive. I'd like to change that and get more areo into my life using only the best parents out there! It ought to be possible to create some jaw-dropping crosses that pick up in the fall where moorei leaves off in the spring. Below are photos from a couple of my 2016 crosses. Now I'm not saying that these are Improved yet, but they are already a cut above your average areo and are the first step in what I am sure will be a fun and productive breeding project. Stay tuned!
A whole mess of plants from 3 different crosses. What do they have in common? There is alata Night on one side and either a leucophylla or a leuco-dominant plant on the other.

Didn't realize my lens was smeared with vaseline like a '40s romance flick when I snapped this pic but oh well! This is leucophylla Purple Lips x alata Night and is showing the increased robustness I'm after while also boasting some great color.

This is (mitchelliana D-P x leucophylla Purple Lips) x alata Night. The mitch parent is a sibling to Mega Mouth if that gives an idea of it's looks. Overall this cross is producing stout plants with crazier lids and this is no exception. A very robust lip as well which is a bit hard to discern in the pic

This plant is 1/16th rosea but you can still see it in the hood!
