It is a pdf, so take your time and read through it. I will summarize as well. 2 S. minor sites were chosen. One with lots of light, and one with cover.
The S. minor plants at both sites had their areoles manipulated, from 0-100% covered in ink (in 25% increments).
IN THE FULL SUN ENVIRONMENT - Overall prey capture decreased with darker areoles, but biodiversity was the same
IN THE SHADED ENVIRONMENT - Prey count stayed the same, but BIODIVERSITY of prey decreased.
A quick quote from the abstract:
"Reducing the number of visual lures of plants at the sunny site produced a signifi- cant decrease in the number of prey captured, but prey biodiversity (community composition) was unaffected. However, total prey capture was unaffected at the shaded site, while prey biodiversity was negatively correlated with the percent of areoles colored. Results from the current study suggest that areoles conditionally act as visual lures, but their overall importance is dependent on local environmental variables—especially canopy cover and the amount of incident sunlight reaching the plants."
I suggest everyone give this paper a read through. It is actually a particularly interesting read.
stu: Hi Mike: I’m pleased to report that the S. rubra wherryi Chatom Giant you sent has arrived in great shape as did the bonus plant from NC. Both are now back under southern skies and are feeling warm, humid, and at home again. Thanks!

adaetz100: Sarracenia purpurea tends to add a lot of red/purple to its offspring, but there are some lovely dark red flava x leucophylla crosses too. Look up 'Royal Ruby' if you're not familiar with it already--it's a natural flava x leuco hybrid
