I had the rare opportunity to visit Predatory Plants (Josh Brown's operation) and I even hauled my wife and little Ellie there too! The nursery is not open to the public, so you'll have to enjoy these pics electronically. It was Hotter than hell the day we visited because the sun was out.
Josh has an AMAZING Nepenthes collection and he also has cutting edge Nepenthes hybrids, many of which he sells on his website: www.predatoryplants.com While I wasn't able to photograph everything, I did snap pics of quite a few cool specimens.
Here's upper pitcher of N. hamata!!!
Check out the teeth on this thing:
N. tenuis?
A glance at some of the collection specimens used for breeding, there were LOTZ of them, and most were high quality species/hybrids:
N. aristolochioides:
I think this is N. Peter D'Amato (who still calls me "little Mikey Wang" because he's known me since I was a little kid):
Ellie had a bunch of fun looking at all the weird plants:
A really beautiful P. laueana:
And the owner of Predatory Plants, Josh Brown. I surmise he was listening to gangsta rap, but that's only a wild guess:
A really nice N. burkei:
I dunno, veitchii?
Josh had a light setup in the background and he took me back there to check it out. At first, I thought "hmmmm, those are just "tomatoes" you're growing under the bench, right?" Keep in mind, Josh is one of those hard working, super smart Stanford Grads that goes out and achieves, so it was all very confusing to me.
Turns out, he's got some Sarracenias under those buzzing lights! To the right is S. flava var. rugelii AxB, I think the seeds were 7-8 years old and he still had excellent germination! These were only a year from sowing:
Some promising crosses in the batches:
With great success comes some failure too, but without failure, you rarely learn how to succeed:
Damn, that was profound wasn't it? Been hearing some Samurai-like wisdom from Calen lately (he was an old wise dude from China in his former life, you know with the long grey beard and all the villagers came up to him for advice....35.85% certain of that). Anyways, more pics:
This little orchid lasts forever, and smells heavenly!
More pics to come, so stay tuned!
