I was watering my sarracenia earlier and I managed to take pics of a female praying mantis feasting on her unfortunate mate. I had to endure more than a dozen mosquito bites to grab these pics. The blowing wind wasn't helping either.
Got this plant from Mike Wang. This is a young version of S. flava 'extreme red throat'. Certainly environmental differences and possibly age are causing this plant to look somewhat different from the plants Mike grows in California. See the Plant Pics section, flava....S. flava 'extreme red throat' post by Mike Wang. My plant is barely holding on to anything that actually resembles veining. We'll see if it fills in completely.....(I don't think it will.) Hopefully I can keep this one going to find out its full potential....it's definitely a keeper.
Here's a shot back-lit ....now we can see a little better what's going on with the veining. Still....coloration on crack!!
I think there's a lot of diversity in this variant, and certainly you'll see a lot of phenotypic variation as it is grown from on environment to the next. I have a few plants that show little to no veining on them whatsoever, whereas others have lots of veining. One thing that is definitely showing, regardless of the environmental conditions, is that extreme red throat! Looking really nice!
stu: Hi Mike: I’m pleased to report that the S. rubra wherryi Chatom Giant you sent has arrived in great shape as did the bonus plant from NC. Both are now back under southern skies and are feeling warm, humid, and at home again. Thanks!

adaetz100: Sarracenia purpurea tends to add a lot of red/purple to its offspring, but there are some lovely dark red flava x leucophylla crosses too. Look up 'Royal Ruby' if you're not familiar with it already--it's a natural flava x leuco hybrid
