Hi ya'll,
I joined the forum a few months back and I need to say hello. My location data is SE Guilford County, NC .
I began growing Sarrs about 2 years ago and got more serious over the past 12 months. Seems like acquiring Sarrs has an accelerative effect.
At last count, I have about 300 clones/hybrids and 100 or so 4x4 inch pots of seedlings.
To hold the growing horde, I dug out three 15 ft. x 15 ft. washed sand and peat moss bogs. It took forever to wash the sand and wet the peat. Y’all know this already. Planning a bigger bog already.
I want to make crosses and build on recent genetics so I bought seeds. Put a grow light in the sunroom. My 14 week old seedlings now have as many as 7 tiny pitchers. I didn’t expect them to have all different colors and even some veins. They are sooooo cute and growing faster than you all let on. hmmm.
I wonder if the first ancestral Sarr was like 12 week old seedlings – simple tubes with a flute-like opening at one end?
Hopefuly I will get some interesting and unique plants. I may never create any great hybrids. It’s the climb, not the destination.
I have a TDS meter now. My well water is 80 ppm TDS, but I have water rights to an adjacent 14 acre pond with 20ppm TDS, so that’s what I use. We average 42 inches of rain per year which should flush the bogs and outdoor tubs pretty well. A fall Hurricane will certainly do the trick. I use Walmart distilled water at 60 cents a gallon for the indoor seedling tubs.
The grow light bathes the side of my house in an eerie pinkish magenta glow at night. One neighbor called to warn me about the blaze and offered to call the Fire Department so I could escape. Another implored, “c’mon dude, share some of that weed.” I did not tell him yet that I am not growing weed as he might think lesser of me. Better to play the bad-boy stoner. Just need tattoos.
Eventually, I will attempt to upload some photos of the Sarr bogs, the outdoor tubs for new plants, and my seedling tubs. Not much now, but maybe you can feel the dream.
So its mid-May in North Carolina. No words can describe the excitement of new growth and flowers, but ya’ll know.
Gosh, this is a long monologue. Will do my best to contribute to the forum. Hope to meet some of you in person in August in Santa Rosa.
Dan
