I have used granite paver base from a masonary supply (also available bagged from Home Depot) as the base for my mix for a couple of years now but have been reluctant/afraid to eliminate peat totally. This makes me want to try out a few plants in pure inorganic sand to see what happens under my conditions.
Moral of the story, not all 'sand' is silica dioxide even with appropriate breathing hazards on the label. It may have some silica dioxide but may have sea shells for milennia past where it is locally mined. The calcium, magnesium, and other elements dissolve quicker from the acidic peat changing the pH of your water and media.
If you're still looking for sand I buy all of mine from a local pool supply store. It's $8 for a 50 pound bag
